Listing description
Olea europaea subsp. Maroccana is a subspecies of the common olive tree present in southern
Morocco and the High Atlas.
Detailed description
Description
It is a tree when it is old, up to 20 m high. The trunk is gnarled, with hard wood. But in many cases, the olive tree takes on a bushy appearance,
with only a few meters high: this form is explained as a means of defending the
tree, the compact and compact shape makes it possible to better fight the winds
and Animals that graze foliage.
The leaves are lanceolate, acuminate at apex reddish
brown, progressively contracted into a petiole 2-7 mm long.
The taxon is morphologically and genetically close
to Olea europaea subsp. Guanchica of the Canaries, this olive tree would come from an
ancestral stock originating in tropical Africa 1 .
The taxonomy of this sample is a problem because the
olives are not pointed as indicated by the diagnosis of the subspecies
maroccana 2 .
The specimen of the photo opposite taken in 1965
northeast of Casablance ( Wadi Mellah valley ) had been determined as "Oleastre". In the light of our current knowledge in 2013, this
determination is called into question (Oleastre or Oe maroccana).
